About Us: James L. Neal has been studying astrology for over 30 years, and has developed a unique style of teaching the "science of astrology," one that is much more in-depth than any pop-culture newspaper column. He has focused on making astrology accessible to everyone. Astrology is one of the most effective self-help tools we have, so from a foundation of classes, speaking engagements and personal consultations, James produced his audio CD, "What is Astrology? Astrology at Your Own Pace.” And in order to enhance the effectiveness of this self-help tool, he is now looking to add visuals to the audio of that CD.

Job Description: This project is a "labor of love" and the ideal candidate should be passionately interested to learn about astrology in exchange for their expertise in motion graphics. We are looking for someone who is willing to contribute their expertise to this exciting project. And, in return, they will not only learn about astrology, but also about themselves. We are seeking to complete a 90 minute DVD which will be a mix of motion graphics, animation and live video, designed to instruct viewers and educate them about the science of astrology. There is a lot of potential for this to be an extremely creative and visually exciting DVD that would be a great portfolio piece! Please send a resume and cover letter to Lectureman12@aol.com

Required Skills: Proficiency in the following graphic and animation software on a MAC platform: Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash, AfterEffects, Cinema4D & Final Cut Pro. Also, must be dedicated, respectful, and committed to the project from beginning through to the end.

Because of a variety of software jobs in video and technical jobs in production, I have all the experience to get me going in a full fledged career creating motion graphics using cool tools like After Effects. I have never failed at moving into a new field I liked, but every time I go look at the job listings, my whole system freezes up and frankly, I just want to throw up. Corporate logos? Slick, sexy ads about violent TV shows? Ads that make you feel insecure so you reach out for their products? Blech! Gratuitous violence to evoke the ever-hungered adrenalin rush? Eye candy that isn't designed to mean a thing? Blech! My soul won't let me even lift a finger.

I know that good After Effects artists are hard to come by but where in the world are the filmmakers and business owners with any conscience? Don't they think that goodness, honesty and inspiration can draw people to them?

Some guy told me recently that he wished there were more women in the field because they would change the nature of motion graphics in our culture. I think he is exactly right. I do think that more men could have the courage to design from their hearts, too.

I did a search in Google for "Non-Violent Motion Graphics" thinking SOMEONE must have started something, but no, nothing came up. That's the next movement I am going to start.

If you are at that place where you are trying to figure out how to make your website work for you and attract more visitors who return more than once, this is just what you need. This won't design your website for you, but you will walk away knowing exactly what you need to do in order to make it happen. After years and years of friends asking both of us these questions, we realized that a workshop would be the best way to provide answers at a price much more reasonable than a one-on-one consultation. So, two thumbs up from me, especially if you are one of the people who hits me up regularly on ways to improve your business and online presence.

Jenka says:

Dear Friends,

It is a pleasure to announce that I will be leading a workshop on February 9th to help creative professionals make more effective websites.

After working on scores of websites, I've noticed that musicians, artists, and creative entreprenuers in general tend to share the same requirements for an effective website, and very often make the same mistakes when creating one. Many folks have approached me for advice on how they can enhance or improve their sites, and so it's with great excitement that I have decided to do a workshop to share my insight and expertise. My goal is to make sure attendees gain an understanding of the options, strategies, and resources at their disposal for creating an online presence that will help move their business forward, and leave ready to start implementing them right away.

More information on the workshop and tickets can be found at:

Feel free to pass this on to anyone you think would benefit from the information.

I look forward to seeing you on February 9th!
A long time ago, I created 3D anaglyphs by creating a blue and red off-set channel in photoshop, but other than that, I've never tried this before. Any advise/tips you guys have, would be helpful.

I know that After Effects has a "3D Glasses" filter, but I'm not sure of the exact process of shooting or exporting my 3D animations from Cinema 4D so that it will properly work.

Here are my GUESSES:

For video footage - place two cameras side by side and record. (one camera for Left Channel and one for Right Channel) Hope there is a better option since I only have one camera.

For Cinema 4D/Maya: Create two cameras that are side by side and render two quicktimes out. (one from each camera view)
I'm assuming for both, my only option is the red/blue 3d glasses method, but if there are better methods (like the clear 3D glasses that are handed out at movie theaters), let me know.
Thanks.

I worked my way up in post audio (I career I am eagerly in the process of transitioning out of!) by starting as a runner. I made coffee, went on runs, learned from those above me and eventually moved up the ladder.
Is there an equivalent to this type of career path in the motion graphics/effects world? Are there jobs that are considered 'entry' level? Is there a way to continue garnering chops while already working in the industry or are empoyers already expecting most AE artists to be able to hit the ground running?

I was hoping for some suggestions as far as areas of study that would enhance my abilities in After Effects. Do most users have an art/graphic design background? If so, what areas of study have helped the most in conjunction with After Effects?
Allucinari is now searching for talented Designs and Visual Effects Artists as well as Concept Artists. You do not have to do all of them, just one. Read the description that best suits you.

There is no location requirement.

DESIGN -

In the design category, we mostly do concert screen design and music videos. We also design television and film titles and animated logos. We are looking for artists with a very strong sense of aesthetics ("what is beautiful"). We hire freelance on a per job basis. We hire artists with a variety of styles, but all of them understand and have experience building for production clients - meaning knowing how to build so that things can change. Our turn arounds are usually moderate to quick. Within one job, we will often contract one artst for several designs, but always start with just one.

Please send links of your reels to designerjobs2007@allucinari.com

FX -

We create visual FX for Film and Television. We hire freelancers who work from their home mostly and hire shot by shot at first; sometimes by shot groups or sequences. Most of the work is compositing, but we are looking for matte painters and 3D artists as well.

In addition to generalists, we are in search of:

3D Hard surface organic modelers for things like armored characters and motorcycles.
3D Character Rigger and animators.
2D Rotoscopers
2D Compositors

Please mention what application you use. Modo and Lightwave are a plus for 3D.

Please send links of your reels to fxjobs2007@allucinari.com

CONCEPT ARTISTS -

We are looking for concept artists to fuel ideas for both our effects and design work. A heavy anime/sci-fi range would be a big plus to see.

I have a scene I want to do for our low-budget movie and would appreciate advice greatly.

It's a long master shot of a huge, huge room, starting at a ventilation grill on the wall and pulling back, back, back, revealing rows and rows of tables and racks and shelves and stuff. Interspersed in this master shot will be a bunch of cutaways of various close-ups of action in all the parts of this room.

Now, we COULD do this if we had a warehouse and a thousand extras, but we don't. Alas.

What we're THINKING of doing is this: Building the room using a 3d
tool, such as Merlin VR, with some basic texturing and shapes. Then,
shooting live-action versions of the various things on the shelves and tables and trying to composite them into the sequence using After Effects.

So, with that in mind, what would you recommend for tools and whatnot?

Have any of you done this sort of thing before? Any advice?

The edges of the frame are all black (this was a dark room). in fact, MOST of the frame footprint is black. I'd like to loop that 20-second piece of footage, oh, about five times, say, and export it as an AVI, which will eventually be composited into another piece of video.

The thing I want to do, however, is add a feathered alpha channel around the red table.

The reason is that Inside the composite, it's mostly black and I want to put a lot of tables in there, so I'll be dropping this (and other similar video clips) in all over the place, and I want the edges to feather out to, basically, transparent.

Can I do this in After Effects and if so, how do I do it?

I can solve this problem, I THINK, by laying a version of the clip on TOP of this one, with some sort of color shifting that makes green red, and then cut a mask in it and move the mask along with my actor, so that he remains the normal color as per the video below.

The thing is, I don't know how to actually PERFORM this sort of color change.

I have over 10 years experience working as a freelance designer, animator, and compositor. I've been blessed to have consistent work flow my way for the past several years. Perhaps you too have an interest in getting into motion graphics. My classes will go beyond what you learn in the books to teach you tips and tricks you won't learn except on-the-job. I will also go beyond the software to teach you a lot of the tricks of self-promotion. Truly the best way to learn is to make as many mistakes as possible, and learn from each one, and the most demanding and rewarding way to learn is to learn on the job. But don't mix the two or they won't call you back again. Trust me, I've seen it. ;-) So why not learn the basics, learn from the mistakes, before you get out there and get jobs?

I haven't established a cost, just checking on interest first.
I am wondering if there are any Media Manager gurus out there who can help with an urgent technical issue??

I trying to output source edited footage as 800 x 600 PNG files from my timeline. I will need to hand off the PNG files (PNG video- not STILL images) to an After Effects editor. The reason we are outputting using PNG video codec is because we need each single clip uncompressed for compositing/effects to alter frame rate. We have tried troubleshooting with the media manager, but can't figure out how to have each file match the EXACT length of clips within the timeline. In other words, the PNG files to be imported in After Effects should match the same length of trimmed/edited clips in my FCP timeline. Also, if there's an easy way to re-name the clips- so we can import in sequential edited order that would be amazing.

Any ideas/ suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

note that it cuts at 02:40, still working out closure. Mostly curious about reactions to the intro. It's pretty lo-fi / whack, something I'd like to do more of.
Also very interested in opinions on:
-Clips that suck
-Clips that don't suck
-Music - love it/hate it?

Some context on the reel - if you're curious:
-I'm usually called for design/prodution gigs (to do both the design and animation)
-I'm trying to focus on design/direction, but need to show the AE skills to stay fed.
-I'm going after less corporate stuff, more trailers, titling, music videos
-I don't use any 3D apps, all the 3D stuff is within AE
-My style isn't tight, it's um, 'eclectic'. I'm okay with that, but want to tighten up some
-I'm really into lo-fi, in-camera effects, but can't find clients willing to pay for it. yet.

Please don't repost this, a couple clips that aren't cleared yet.

PS: I'd love to other see more peeps posting reels and work on this list. Especially interested in hearing/seeing alternatives to the typical 'montage reel'.

Hi,

I'm a web designer of 10 years. i've gotten by with just the basic stuff, some flash, lots of photoshop... But over the last couple years I've been seeing websites that are just blowing me away and I want to do what they're doing. Motion graphics are really taking off, and I want to get in on it!

Here are some examples of the kind of work I want to be doing:

http://www.evb.com/
http://www.oringe.com/flashSite/

People tell me I need to learn how to use After Effects if I want to do this stuff, but Flash 8 is getting pretty advanced and I'm wondering if I can't do the same stuff in Flash?

I really don't know the difference between the motion/video aspects of Flash and After Effects.

I plan on spending quite a bit of time learning how to master (hopefully) AE, I just got the book "Creating Motion Graphics with AE" from Trish & Chris Meyer and studying AE is time I could be spending on getting better at Flash (learning ActionScript).

So my first question, is do I need to learn both if I'm just designing for the web or can I replace anything AE can do with Flash 8?

What's the difference basically?

Also, I'd like to be able to do the TV title stuff, (but for the web) you know like ABC, NBC, etc... I assume some kind of 3-D program like Maya or 3D studio Max is used to make something like that? Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

http://www.blur.com/html_quicktime/design_reel.html
http://tinyurl.com/qfs2r

Fo my next question I was wondering if someone would be able to look at my link and tell me what kind of programs were used for the title motion. What was used to create the source images and what was used to put it all together.

I realize I'm asking a bunch of questions all at once, but I'm ready to take my designs to the next level and I want to immerce myself in motion... I'm just not sure how to start and what to learn exactly???

Thanks!

Also, I heard Mac is phasing out their relationship / support of Adobe products, since they introduced their own dealios (Motion? Shake?) I just want to choose which one is most effeicient to learn, to stay competitive as an editor (mostly FCP, but also some Avid / previously.)

It could be quite profitable for you and a real life changer. We are in pre-production of three others...one on black jazz in Paris after WWII until now. We have a Turkish captain/crew/cook on our 70' Gulet, 6 double staterooms still available, all with their own head (toilet and shower). Qualifications? Simply to be able to get along with people. Age? Our producer is 60, our editor is 25. Age inmaterial if you are young in spirit. If you have video experience (HD MiniDV PAL and Final Cut Pro, writing) all the better, but we are doing this to perhaps expand the focus of our documentary which is based on the mystical aspects of Alexander the Great - Title: Force of Evidence. Creative people get free reign as long as they don't sink the ship or the project. We are interested to add some human interest...profound, provocative, funny...to the program, so film making experience in not a requirement. Come for a week or two months.
Would I start out with an if statement? How do I look at the name of the previous comp (this_layer, -1) to be specific.

I dig the whole 3:2 pulldown thing for taking film to video, but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around how to take 30 fps interlaced video to 24 fps progressive.

I'm guessing it would be better to do it to my raw footage *before* editing, to avoid complications there. I'm also guessing the trick might involve converting the video to 60 fps deinterlaced progressive first, to make dropping frames easier.

But then, I'm talking out my ass. Any of y'all have any experience doing this?
in Shatter, check "white pixels remain"
advance enough frames that the bg falls away, then trim off the in to there
crank up the extrusion depth and there you go.

I just fired it up for the first time and am being horrified at the performance I'm getting out of it. I imported a 5 minuted long clip of DV, from the same camera I normally use, and on the same computer I normally use. Simple things, like, say taking a look at the waveform, is taking forever. I've been hitting the hard drive for over 10 minutes now, and still don't have a visible waveform. I tried rendering the clip as a movie at half res -- something that would have only taken 10 minutes or so before, and now it's projecting three hours!!! What's the deal?

I am helping a friend of mine work on a monthly TV show he puts together and he has asked me to fill a tall order for him. His show is about interesting sites in south-east kansas and basically he wants a graphic that is a map and a line that starts in one town and moves to the town he is in on the map, Showing the route he took and how far its is, blah blah blah. Anyway, i was wondering if this is something i have to do in after effects or if it's possible to do in Imageready. I know this is an after effects tribe but being an Adobe product i figured someone here might know a way to do it in imageready so i don't have to learn AE to do this. (and besides that there is no imageready tribe)

So for the past few months I've been working on the second volume of digital stock backgrounds for Digital Anarchy. They are SD and HD backgrounds that ship with the actual AE Project file, and have been created using nothing but plug-ins that come with AE and elements that we've designed ourselves. I created all the backgrounds except for #12 and #14-18. Those were made by Robin Richardson.

Check them out here:
http://chaosstock.com/vol02/footage02.htm

Personally, I hate them...probably because I've been staring at them all since I graduated and haven't had much of a design break between creating these and testing our other projects. I'd like to hear your harshest feedback in order to get a sense of what other designers look for in their stock footage, and get background design ideas that I can put into Volume 3. This is basically my foot in the water for the motion design industry.

Thanks!

Hiya!

I have AE Pro, but probably a rev or two back. There's a scene I'd like to make, but I want to know if y'all think AE is a good tool for this. If it WAS possible in AE, I'd rather use it because, frankly, I HAVE it.

So, imagine a big old chunk of 3-space. A flat-bottomed thing with one wall and a ceiling. Think in terms of a giant warehouse, pretty huge in size. I want to take the camera from where it's looking at one window on the wall and truck it all the way across to the opposite end of the warehouse. But this place is so big that we never see the right or left sides. Just really big.

Distributed at regular intervals in this warehouse (think at the intersections of a 10' x 10' grid in this warehouse) are SCENARIOS. The scenarios are like little "piles" of action. Each scenario loops. Each scenario is a bit of video.

Also distributed at regular intervals are flamey light sources, to cast light on the ceiling. The light itself doesn't have to be visible, but the casting up the ceiling would really help with the atmosphere.

As the camera trucks away from the window, more and more of the scenarios become visible until we are finally, at the end of the scene, faced with what appears to be thousands of scenarios, a massive warehouse buzzing with activity.

So...

I have some rudimentary ability to do basic animation and keyframing and whatnot in AE. I'm not a total newbie to it. But this is one tricky bitch of a task and I really could use some advice/suggestions on doing it.

As far as I can tell, I would set up the room first in 3-space, consisting of big ol' still images, each "projected" appropriately in that 3-space.

Then, if I can add my light sources, I will.

Then, I laboriously place the video for each of the scenarios, projected on an invisible screen located at a specific place. The scenarios are already shot, but will need a bit of tweaking to make sure th gestalt makes sense.

I don't actually HAVE thousands of scenarios -- I have about a hundred, but I am hoping to time-shift them enough so that I have PRACTICALLY a thousand and so that no one notices the obvious patterns.

After all of that is done, I add my camera movement.

When I am happy with all the results, I eventually render the whole composite out and import the sequence into my Premiere timeline as an AVI.

So, is this a good meaty task for After Effects or is this beyond the ken of AE?

Any advice? Tips? Suggestions? Help?

One thing that bugs me is the main title "NBA Legends" that appear at the end of the piece. I wanted to make it stand out somehow from the rest of the piece, but the result looks kinda cheesy and unfinished. (the logo is constantly changing colors and there is a rotating basketball)

If I had any "tag" graphitti skills, I would have drawn the logo, but that just might because I've played the video game "NBA Street" too much. (has a lot of graphitti-style type)
